Elm Shakespeare Company's 29th annual summer production, Richard III, directed by Rebecca Goodheart is anchor the company’s expanding season at the Alexander Clark Playhouse Stage in Edgerton Park.  The internationally renowned theater artist Lisa Wolpe, known for her groundbreaking work on Shakespeare and gender, will return to play the title role of Richard. Wolpe's involvement brings a unique depth to the character, offering audiences a new perspective on the classic play, which will explore the role society plays in creating villains and the cost of political violence on us all.  Her innovative approach to gender in theater juxtaposed to a traditional medieval setting, promises to be a production that continues Elm Shakespeare's tradition of bringing thought-provoking and accessible Shakespeare to New Haven.

More Ways To Come Together Than Ever Before!

Performances & Conversation All Over Town

Created in the social and cultural reckoning that followed George Floyd’s murder, Building a Brave New Theatre is an event and community conversation series that interrogates how Shakespeare serves the 21st century, explores compelling issues of the moment, and amplifies innovative theatre makers from historically marginalized communities. This year, we will be exploring the many facets of GENDER through the lens of Shakespeare with two LIVE productions by internationally acclaimed artists and three deep dives with artists, scholars, and activists where together we will unearth new relevance and illuminate current issues.

Funny, fierce, deep and accessible, Tina Packer’s Women of Will is the bonus content to Shakespeare’s plays that you have been searching for. Master Shakespearean, Tina Packer directs Elm Artistic Director Rebecca Goodheart - deconstructing and conjuring William Shakespeare’s most famous female characters in this exciting first production since Packer’s nationally acclaimed off-Broadway run and international tour.

A combination of riveting scenes and trenchant analysis, Tina Packer’s Women of Will explores themes of love, loss, freedom, control, violence, and power through the heroines of Shakespeare’s text. Using performance and discussion, Packer/Goodheart, with ace actor Nigel Gore, trace the chronological evolution of Shakespeare’s female characters, and examine Shakespeare’s own journey and growth as a writer.
